DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL ONCOLOGY
The Department of Medical Oncology at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology is a nationally and internationally acclaimed unit for the treatment of adult solid tumors and hematological malignancies. The medical oncology department subscribes to all the objectives, vision and mission of the Institute. The Department of Medical Oncology was started under the leadership of Dr N Lalitha along with Paediatrics wing, who was a renowned professor of Medicine at Government Medical College.
The Medical Oncology specialty uses medicines to treat cancer. The Department of Medical Oncology at KMIO plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancers of the blood as well as solid organs. The services are provided by a multidisciplinary team consisting of Medical Oncologists, Physicians, Nurses, Clinical Psychologists & Sociologists. The Department specializes in the treatment of cancer with chemotherapy, biotherapy, supportive care and bone marrow transplantation. The Department is also involved in DM Training in Medical Oncology and a broad range of Basic Research as well as Clinical Research.
The Department of Medical Oncology consists of 6 faculty members (consultants) who are highly qualified and immensely experienced. 22 DM trainees are currently undergoing their DM training in Medical Oncology under these 6 faculty members. The Nursing Staff are well trained and well versed in chemotherapy administration and care of long-term venous access devices and chemoports. The team effort by committing ourselves to patient care has resulted in improved survival rates and reduced morbidity. The Department of Medical Oncology is committed to further improving the diagnosis and treatment of adult patients with cancer.
The Department runs outpatient clinic services every day where about 200 to 300 patients visit the OPD per day. At any point of time, around 90 patients are admitted as in-patients in wards for chemotherapy, management of complications and for work-up. For every new patient, after a diagnosis is established, there is Departmental meeting for planning of treatment. The Department has its own medical minor O.T. and procedure room where all the minor procedures such as Bone Marrow Aspirations / Biopsy, Ascitic and Pleural Tapping, True Cut Biopsy etc., are carried out under full aseptic precautions. The two Day care chemotherapy wards under the Department provide day care chemotherapy to approximately 80 patients per day. The Department also provides for autologous stem cell transplantation for malignancies like non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma and allogenic stem cell transplantation for leukemias through the BMT Block under it. Department also helps in the treatment of poor patients along with government schemes and charity from various social organizations.
