INTRODUCTION

DEPARTMENT OF SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

Department of Surgical Oncology constitutes a major pillar of the prestigious Kidwai Cancer Institute. It is an ideal showcase of the KCI tenets of hard work and dedicated patient care. The annual footfall of patients in KCI is about 20,000 patients, a major proportion of which receive treatment in our department be it in the form of radical surgery, palliative surgery or a kind word. Department of Surgical Oncology is constituted by 3 surgical units. Each unit is headed by Professors with vast experience and updated surgical skills. The Department consists of 3 Professors, 3 Associate Professors, 4 Assistant Professors 3 Senior Residents and 24 MCh Post Graduates.

The Surgical Oncology Department affiliated to RGUHS is actively involved in training M.Ch Super Specialty Post Graduate Students. There is an intake of 8 M.Ch PG students every year selected through NEET PG examinations. Department follows a rigorous teaching programme such as Subject Seminars, Journal Clubs and case discussions covering all aspects of the subject ranging from basic Oncology to intricacies of management of specific cancers and evidence based patient care. Practical training in advanced surgical skills is imparted extensively between the three units and additional postings in other departments.

The department also plays a role in inspiring and finessing young minds enrolled in M.S General Surgery post graduate courses all over Karnataka during their peripheral postings at our institute by teaching them the concepts of Surgical Oncology.

The Department of Surgical Oncology is also involved in both theoretical and practical training of B.Sc O.T Technology students affiliated to RGUHS. Each year 10 students are admitted through selection by Karnataka Examination Authority.

Each staff member is committed to furthering medical education through organizing CME’s, conferences and research activities. Research is actively conducted by all 3 Units in Association with the M.Ch PG Students with publications in National and International Journals in addition to the thesis submission to RGUHS.
