Journey of the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology
The Institute has grown from a 50-bed inpatient hospital in 1973 to 863 beds in 2023 (Regular Hospital beds: 757 and ICU beds: 106); other than regular hospital wards in ‘Dharmashala’ providing 407 beds, more are planned to host the growing load of increasing cancer incidence. Cancer care being highly complex and multimodal has frequently changing dynamics. A cancer institute is like 10 different Hospitals in One roof catering to a single patient under one roof. KMIO has consistently made efforts to deliver good quality cancer care to the poor and needy. The concept of Dharmashala was also made as o support measure for patient coming from out of station.
KMIO has grown from one cobalt machine for Radiation therapy in 1973 and now has the biggest Radiation Oncology & Brachytherapy facility in the country with Seven linear Accelerators & three brachytherapy units, 4 CT scanner (2 wide bore simulators), one MRI. KMIO is also the first Government centre to start the permanent Implant brachytherapy services (commonly practiced in US & Europe) with AERB/BRIT radioactive iodine seeds. In the last 8 month, KMIO has implemented a dedicated Bone marrow transplant unit with 10 specialized BMT beds and has also performed BMT with literally no cost to the patients. KMIO also has been able to achieve the 1st Allogenic BMT in a Government Centre. KMIO has initiated academic and research collaboration with various universities in US and Europe. In the last 4 months, KMIO has started a dedicated medical ICU with 45 beds. KMIO also has been rendering advanced surgical procedure, including Davinci Robotic services and laparoscopy services, endoscopy services, limb conserving customised prosthetic implants etc to our cancer patients. KMIO also has been praised by many for its good patient hospital infrastructure, research and academic activities. KMIO has also set up peripheral cancer centre at VTSM PCC Kalburagi and is functioning well and more up gradation is planned. In order to reduce the patient load at KMIO Bangalore and to serve the patients in proximity to their residence, new peripheral cancer Centres have been sanctioned by Government of Karnataka, in Tumakuru, Mysuru, Shivamogga, Belgavi etc. KMIO has also been regular conducting health check-up camps for general population.
